The useful baseline.
The 5400 guides many maintenance jobs through its display. AquaClean status, the Clean menu and on-screen prompts should take priority over a generic fixed timetable.
Drip tray & grounds
Empty as needed and keep both areas clean.
LatteGo
Use Quick Milk Clean and keep both removable LatteGo parts clean.
Brew group
Remove, rinse with lukewarm water and let it dry.
Coffee-oil clean
Run Brew group clean from the Clean menu.
AquaClean
Replace and activate the new filter in Settings.
Descaling
Use Clean → Descaling and complete the full guided rinse.

Weekly care
Clean the Philips 5400 brew group.

Switch the machine off
Use the normal power control and wait for shutdown to finish.

Remove the brew group
Open the service door, press PUSH and carefully pull the brew group towards you.

Rinse thoroughly
Rinse with lukewarm water and clear visible coffee residue.

Let it air-dry
Drain excess water and let the brew group dry naturally.

Reinstall
Slide the brew group back into its guides until secure and close the service door.
If the brew group will not release, do not force it. Let the machine complete a normal power cycle, then try again.
Water filtration
Replace and activate AquaClean.
Installing the filter physically is only half the job — the machine also needs to know the new filter is fitted.

Prepare the new filter
Shake it for about 5 seconds, then prime it upside down in cold water until the bubbles stop.

Install it in the tank
Push the filter vertically onto the tank connection and refill with fresh water.

Open AquaClean settings
Tap Settings and select AquaClean.

Activate the filter
Confirm the new filter and follow the on-screen activation instructions.

Watch filter status
Replace the filter when requested by the machine, then activate the replacement in AquaClean settings.
If the machine requires descaling before it will accept a new filter, complete the descale cycle first.
Display-guided descaling
Descale the Philips 5400.
The 5400 guides the process through the Clean menu, including the final rinse.

Select Descaling
Tap Clean, select Descaling and follow the display.

Prepare the machine
Remove LatteGo, empty and refit the drip tray and grounds container.

Remove AquaClean
Remove and empty the water tank, then take out the AquaClean filter.

Prepare the tank
Prepare descaler according to its instructions and fill to the required Calc/Clean level.

Place a large container
Put at least a 1.5 litre container under the outlets and start when instructed.

Complete the rinse
Rinse and refill the tank with fresh water when prompted and let the rinse finish.

Restore normal setup
When complete, refit and activate filtration if you use AquaClean.
Monthly deep clean
Run the coffee-oil cleaning programme.
Philips uses the Clean menu to guide this job on compatible 5400 machines. Follow the display rather than trying to memorise a long manual sequence.

Open the Clean menu
Switch the machine on, tap Clean and select Brew group clean.
Confirm the programme
Confirm the guided cleaning programme on the display.
Add the tablet
Put the suitable coffee-oil cleaning tablet in the pre-ground compartment when instructed.
Let the programme finish
Complete the on-screen steps and allow the cleaning and rinse process to finish.
The screen prompts are the primary reference during the cleaning cycle. If your 5400 variant presents different wording, follow the machine display.
